Mental Health Awareness at St. Georges Tech

Mrs. CunninghamMrs. Martha Cunningham, Nurse Technology Instructor, is the advisor for the UnLocke the Light Club. This student organization promotes the importance of mental health among our Hawk student body. All are welcome to attend the UnLocke the Light meetings. Some students come because they want to provide support to other students, some come because they've experienced depression in the past and want to help others and talk about their experience, and some come because they are seeking out peer support and want a safe space to talk about their stress and feelings.

We are proud to have 3 students successfully go through an 8 week training by the University of Delaware and become SL24 Peer Specialist Supports that do volunteer shifts at Sean's House in Newark, DE.  Special congratulations to our 3 Peer Support Specialists:

Mikayla Murphy, Class of 2023

Brianna Williams, Class of 2023

Taylor Warren, Class of 2022

Our Peer Support Specialists are trained to have open and honest conversations about mental health to reduce stigma, motivate young adults, and promote hope throughout recovery. University of Delaware will begin training a new cohort of peer specialists starting in the Fall of 2021.

Sean’s House is a mental health safe haven for young adults ages 14-24, created by the local non-profit SL24: Unlocke the Light. We promote our guests’ mental wellness by providing access to trained peer support specialists and assistance connecting with community mental health resources, as well as by providing space for guests to do schoolwork, relax with friends, or simply pick up a hot cup of coffee. It is our hope to reduce the rate of youth suicide by providing a place for young adults to feel safe, welcomed, and supported.

On September 14th, 2021 St. Georges Tech was honored to have Mr. Locke come to our school and speak to the sophomore students about the importance of mental health and the impact that suicide has on families. Check out this re-cap video from the day.

We are thankful to have such a supportive staff and student body and be able to have open and honest communication about mental health awareness.

We encourage any of our Hawks to reach out to our school psychologist, guidance counselors, wellness center, any trusted adult in the building, or utilize Sean's House as a resource.
